PRIVATE ORTHODOX TOURS
On tours of your choice, or one we can assist with the making up of, your private tour of Orthodox monasteries will enrich your visit to Rhodes and give you insight into the culture of the locals. The number of churches, monasteries and temples on the island is a true reflection of the enormous role the church plays in everyday life.
An example of a full day tour starts with Agia Tsampika, whose legend holds that if a childless woman wishing to conceive walks barefoot up the mountain to pray to the Blessed Virgin, she will be blessed with child. We continue south along the east coast to Moni Thari, in Laerma, whose foundations date back as far as the 9th century, and paintings on the walls can still be seen from the 11th century. We stop for a lunch break in the village of Embonas and then visit Agios Nikolas Foundoukli on the outskirts of the village of Eleousa, a 14th century Byzantine church situated in a cool green forest. Our last stop is the Church of Our Lady at Filerimos which was rebuilt by the Grand Master d'Aubusson – and one can walk past the 12 shrines depicting the path Jesus took to Calgary to a 20metre high cross which affords views of most of the island on a clear day.
